Maintaining Your Vacuum
Maintaining a vacuum cleaner the right way
A vacuum cleaner that is looked after will last a great deal longer than one that is not. Most of the suction loss, belt failures and motor burn-outs we see in the workshop come down to small maintenance jobs that were never done. The good news is that almost all of them are quick, free, and only need attention every few months.
Tips for properly maintaining your vacuum cleaner
Unplug first. Before opening any cover or removing the brush roll, always unplug the machine at the wall. It is a small habit that prevents the most common workshop injuries.
Empty the bag or bin often. A bag that is only a third full already chokes the airflow, which makes the motor work harder and the carpet less clean. Replace bagged-vacuum bags with the correct size for your model, and empty bagless bins after every use.
Clear the brush roll. Hair, thread and carpet fibres wrap around the brush roll over time and stop it spinning freely. Remove the bottom plate, slide the roll out of the belt and use scissors to cut anything that is wrapped tight, then lift it off. Take care not to lose the small screws.
Check the belt. A vacuum belt is a wear part. If it looks glazed, stretched, narrow or cracked, replace it. A worn belt will keep slipping off the brush roll and stop the agitator turning even though the motor still runs.
Clean or replace the filters. Most modern vacuums have at least one washable filter and one HEPA or fine-dust filter. Rinse the washable ones every month or so and let them dry fully before refitting. Replace the HEPA filter every six to twelve months — they are inexpensive and they make a real difference to suction.
Check the hose for blockages. If suction drops suddenly, disconnect the hose and look through it against the light. A trapped sock or a wedge of pet hair is the most common culprit; a broom handle pushed gently through will usually clear it.
If you have done all of the above and your machine still struggles, bring it in. We will give you a free estimate before any work starts, and in most cases we have the right spare part on the shelf — so you are not waiting days for an order to arrive.
